Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first restaurant in Saudi Arabia in August 2026, at Sidra, a dining destination in Riyadh’s Granada district next to Granada Mall. The American fast-casual chain is working with Alshaya Group, the Kuwait-founded franchise operator that has run its Gulf expansion since 2024, and the Riyadh branch brings its Middle East network to 17 restaurants, according to tbreak’s report of 28 August.

The menu follows the format guests know from elsewhere in the region: burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas and salads, made to order in an open kitchen. Diners choose their protein, rice, beans, salsa and toppings, and guacamole is part of the offer. Alshaya’s announcement pointed visitors to the site via exit 9 on Imam Abdullah Ibn Saud Ibn Abdul Aziz Road.

A franchise-led push across the Gulf

In the Gulf, Chipotle operates through a partner. Its agreement with Alshaya dates from July 2023 and was the chain’s first franchise deal, as Nation’s Restaurant News noted; according to Alshaya’s release, the company’s own international restaurants are in Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, with partner-run restaurants in the Middle East and Mexico. Before Riyadh, the two had opened 16 restaurants across the GCC: seven in the UAE, seven in Kuwait and two in Qatar. tbreak reports that a Bahrain launch and a second Saudi restaurant, in Jeddah, are planned for 2027.

Alshaya describes itself as a family-owned business first established in Kuwait in 1890. Its portfolio runs from Starbucks and Shake Shack to Raising Cane’s, now with Chipotle alongside. Jeff Kellen, president of its hospitality division, said the brand had exceeded the group’s expectations since launching in the region more than two years ago, and that diners in Saudi Arabia had been waiting for it. Nate Lawton, Chipotle’s chief development officer, called the kingdom an important step in the company’s international growth strategy and described Riyadh as a platform for reaching both local guests and international visitors.

What it means for Riyadh

Fast casual is already a busy category in the capital. When What’s On Saudi Arabia published its 2026 shortlist, the Favourite Fast-Casual Restaurant category carried five names, Beast House, BRGR 1983, PrimeCut, Sold Out and Wingstop, and Wingstop took the title at the ceremony on 2 September. Chipotle enters a market where the format is well understood and where, on the Transport General Authority’s count, Riyadh generates 44 per cent of the kingdom’s delivery-platform orders. That figure covers all delivery orders rather than food alone, but it shows how much of the market now runs through apps.

The opening also fits a wider pattern of international brands choosing Riyadh through local partners. Our analysis of why global restaurant groups are betting on the kingdom looks at the numbers behind it, and our report on Berenjak and Cipriani Dolci covers two more arrivals from this year. At the time of its opening, the Riyadh restaurant was Chipotle’s only one in Saudi Arabia.
